Workshop 3 - Brickworks Ceramic Workshop

Brickworks is a community focused ceramic workshop, providing classes and workshops that are open to all. The studio provides the space, facilities and equipment for a range of clay making techniques, with technical support and guidance on hand.

CLASSES

THROWING

In these four week courses you will learn how to throw and trim your own forms on the potters wheel. Each course focuses on a different shape and is suitable for complete beginners or for those wishing to build on existing skills. You will be taken through every stage of making, from clay preparation, centring, forming and finishing. The classes have a maximum of 4 participants and you will be allocated your own wheel for the duration of the course allowing for focused time and plenty of one-to-one tuition.

£120 for four sessions includes tuition, materials, tools and equipment, two firings, and a choice of in house glazes.

WHAT IS GLAZE?

In this four week course you will learn how to mix up, test and adapt a glaze recipe using raw materials from scratch. You will learn the essential ingredients needed to create a glaze and will gain an understanding of the fundamentals behind how a glaze works. We will mix up selected base recipes and alter them, using oxides and stains to explore colour and opacity. We will create line and bi-axel blends to generate new and unexpected results. You will also research and find glaze recipes of your own and have the chance to trial them out.

£130 for four sessions includes tuition, materials, tools and equipment, three firings and all glaze ingredients.

MOULD-MAKING - PLASTER

In this introductory one day course you will learn how to create your own one-piece drop out plaster mould, casting from a found object or pre-fabricated clay former. After the day your mould/s will be dried thoroughly and can then be used for either press-moulding or simple slip-casting to create multiples of your form in clay.

£50 for whole day includes tuition, materials, tools and equipment. You will be able to take any moulds you make away with you at the end of the session.

TASTER SESSIONS

These relaxed and informal sessions are set up to give you the opportunity to try out making with clay for the first time, or for a refresher and intro to the studio if youve done some making before. Sessions allow time for having a go on the potters wheel, attempting a pinch pot or learning how to coil build. Full demonstrations given at the beginning and tuition and support on hand throughout.

£30 for one session includes tuition, materials, tools and equipment and a bisque and glaze firing of any work you produce. A transparent glaze will be put on your work by Rose after the session (included in the initial cost), or if you would like to learn how to glaze your work you can book one of the open access sessions which will be charged at the hourly rate.

ONE STOP POT

One Stop Pot is a new workshop being launched during Open Studios Cornwall. Sessions last for one hour, and the brief is to make one pot. Participants are provided with a set amount of clay,  and are given step by step instructions to follow. Different workshops will explore different techniques and processes, such a press moulding, sgraffito, or pinching. These workshops are suitable for everyone, from complete beginners to experienced makers. More details will be announced over the coming months.

£15 for one session includes tuition, materials, tools and equipment, and a bisque and glaze firing of your work afterwards.

OPEN ACCESS MEMBERSHIP

FULL MEMBERSHIP

Become a full member of the BRICKWORKS studio and make use of our facilities at your own pace. You will be provided with -

 

  • Up to ten hours a week usage of all the studio work areas, tools and equipment.
  • Your own designated shelf space to store your ongoing work, tools and clay (taller work can be stored on alternative shelves in the studio)
  • Opportunity to showcase your work in at least two events per year at our Open Studio Events (May, September, December)
  • Firing service at a reduced rate. Kiln hire available for larger projects
  • Technical support on hand for support for your projects
  • Use of the in house slips and glazes
  • Aftercare of your work post making, e.g. wrapping up thrown pots ready for turning
  • Access to clay store to purchase clay

 

£85 a month, to be paid in advance, minimum 2 month sign up. We currently have space for 12 members.

 

HOURLY ACCESS

Make use of the studio facilities at your own pace with our pay as you go hourly access scheme. You will be provided with -

 

  • Use of all the studio facilities, tools and equipment
  • Shared shelf space to store your ongoing work
  • Technical support on hand for support for your projects
  • Use of the in house slips and glazes
  • Aftercare of your work post making, e.g. wrapping up thrown pots ready for turning
  • Firing service (paid separately), kiln hire available for larger projects
  • Access to clay store to purchase clay

 

£8 an hour, to be paid at the end of your session.

 

FIRING FACILITY

Brickworks offers a firing service for work produced outside of the studio. Regular firing temperatures are 1000, 1100 and 1280 however different temperatures can also be arranged. Contact Rose for details of prices and how to book.

 

ONE-TO-ONE TUITION

If you need specific individual support for your projects you can also book for tuition with Rose during the open access hours at a rate of £12 an hour. Technical advice and support, demonstrations of techniques, trouble shooting for specific problems and tutorial advice are all available.
